Another new toy?

OK- I said I needed a new car. No podcast today, because we spent the evening car shopping.That's where the toy comes in. We're looking at a Prius, the Toyota hybrid. Socially responsible, but about $5k more than we planned.Anyone out there have experience with the car?

Bernie's New Toy

I got a new PalmOne LifeDrive. What may be my favorite feature is turning out to be the built-in WiFi.I had been sitting in my recliner checking my email. No more burned thighs! Then I tried out the Google Mobile Reader to check out my favorite RSS feed blogs.Then I decided to update my blog. The Palm is not the sleekest tool for blogging.  If I posted the unedited text, you would be reading "dosted" instead- my Graffiti 2 is rusty. However, it is portable, and I can sit where I want.It's fun, but not the best way to blog. I'll catch you up on the rest of my life at another time.UPDATED- Links added, since they are hard to do on the Palm!

My First (actual) Day

I spent my first day in the office. It's not really an office, actually. Mayor Bloomberg would call it a bullpen. I don't have a problem with that, but it's different. After 3 years with a door, I will need to make changes.

We started with a crash course in what the department does. In short, it's a big job. There are 3 branches to the department:
  • Data Management;
  • Network maintenance; and
  • Instructional Support.
I asked for an organizational chart, but one does not exist, so I made one. We'll see how it goes over today. It's more for me to know who does what. I don't have to be a nuts and bolts guy, more of a leader and planner.

I haven't gotten into the 'Funded Programs' aspect of it, since the folks handling that are away until tomorrow. That gives me a chance to catch up some more on the technology side, and to familiarize myself (somewhat) with the consolidated application, which sounds like a great thing, since it must implicitly simplify through consolidation. If that's true, I want to know what it looked like before, because this mother is 500 pages easy. I couldn't carry it home, since I had too much to carry.

On the cool side, there is a buyout for insurance, so I can waive the insurance and get a check (great, because I have insurance) and I may be able to do something similar with my phone. I get my new Palm today, I believe, and I got my laptop home and seeing the net. Things may work out at this place.

On an even more personal note, I set up my iPod as an alarm clock, since my radio gets no station. Woke up to Acoustic Alchemy and it was cool. I bought some $10 speakers at Staples and hooked them to the iPod. I don't know how these other guys get away with charging $100 bucks for an iPod alarm clock. A snooze button would be nice, but not worth the extra $80. (I did see it for $80 on Yahoo shopping, but still!)
